Monitaiteellinen On This Planet syntyi usean eri taiteilijan intuitiivisena yhteistyönä.
Teoksessa haluttiin yhdistää perinteisiä elementtejä moderniin tekniikkaan.
Harri Ahmas loi teoksen pohjaksi sävellyksen, jonka levyttivät Marianne ja Tomi Uotila.
Timo Tuovinen sävelsi tietokoneilla kanteleen ja sellon äänimateriaalista monikanavaisen
äänimaiseman, johon akustinen soitinmusiikki liitettiin. Heikki Innanen yhdisti musiikkiin
Hannu Hautalan luontokuvat sekä Leena Gustavsonin tanssikoreografian.
Yksi On This Planetin peruslähtökohdista oli liikkumattoman kuvan hyödyntäminen. Levolliset, aikaan pysäytetyt kuvat antavat katsojalle mahdollisuuden kokea teos yksilöllisesti. Kuvista muodostuu maisema, johon katsoja voi asettua omien henkilökohtaisten kokemustensa kautta. Alkuperäiset diakuvat skannattiin huolellisesti niin että kuvien värisävyt toistuvat mahdollisimman aitoina. Kuvatiedostot yhdistettiin ristikkäiskuvia ja erilaisia leikkauksia käyttäen koko teoksen läpi jatkuvaksi videomaisemaksi. Videomaisemassa oleva liike ja rytmi syntyy kuvien leikkauksista.
On This Planet -teoksen sekä siitä tehdyn DVD-levyn luominen vei 2 vuotta. Näiden vuosien
aikana tarvittiin paljon taustahenkilökuntaa - järjestelijöitä, puvustajia, kampaajia,
maskeeraajia, valokuvaajia, videokuvaajia, erilaisia asiantuntijoita, graafikoita,
kielenkääntäjiä sekä myös ruoan laittajia ja kuljetuskalustoa. Työtä tehtiin yhteistyön
hengessä. Jokainen sai lisää inspiraatiota toisten työsuorituksista sekä niistä uusista
elementeistä, jotka teokseen valmistuivat. Tarvittiin uskallusta, kokeilumieltä ja kovaa työtä.
The multiartistic On This Planet was created as the result of intuitive collaboration of various artists. The desire was to combine traditional elements with modern technology. As a foundation for the project Harri Ahmas composed a piece, which was recorded by Marianne and Tomi Uotila. On computer Timo Tuovinen composed a musical scenery, based on the material of the kantele and cello. The acoustic instrument music was added onto this. Heikki Innanen combined the music with Hannu Hautala's nature images, and Leena Gustavson's dance choreography. One of the foundational points in the making of On This Planet was to harness the use of still pictures. The tranguil, immobilised images give the spectator the opportunity of an intimate elevation The pictures create a scenery for the viewer to set themselves in through their own personal experiences. The original slides were scanned carefully so that the tones of the colours were captured as intact as possible. Material was combined by using cross-fades and various cuts to form a visual scenery that continues throughout the entire piece. The movement in the scenery is created solely by cutting the images. The creation of On This Planet and this DVD took a total of two years. During these years a lot of staff was required. Organizers, dressmakers, hairdressers, make-up artists, photographers, cameramen, various experts, graphic designers, translators, even cooks and transport equipment were needed. The project was done in the spirit of co-operation. Everyone got more inspiration from each other's input and from the new elements that were being created for the project. There was a demand for daring and experimentative spirit and hard work.
